Cooler weather is headed our way and that means it’s time to get ready for winter. Ground temperatures get too cold for the sulcatas, so we fill in their burrows and get their above-ground houses equipped with heat sources.
We purchased a new, larger house for the four sulcatas and moved the smaller dog house into Mikey’s enclosure. Pictures one and two show the new house. We cut the fence to allow room for the house, and attached the fence to the sides. There’s a local man who builds custom dog houses and he does a fabulous job. This one is the same color scheme as Myrtle’s.
Picture number three shows some of the shade cloths we removed from the enclosures. We hang these to provide extra shade from the hot Arizona summer sun, but come cooler weather, they need to be removed.
Pictures four, five, and six show the preparation of Mikey’s house. First it got hosed out, then Mr. Zoo installed some pieces of wood to level the floor, then added a piece of plywood that can be easily removed for cleaning. Next the heat lamp and thermostat are put in place. After I took the picture, any low hanging cords were tied up for safety.
We had been using bedspreads and old towels as entrance covers for the houses. This year we ordered rubber mats and will be cutting them into strips and securing them over the entrances. This will provide a more weatherproof covering.
More pictures and winter planning are coming your way, so be sure to check back next week! Thank you for reading and have a happy animal filled day! 🙂 Mrs. Zoo
