Checking in with Truman the Tortoise

Truman has been with us for a few months now and is having a great time. As you can see from the photo, he’s very enthusiastic about eating. Truman likes to stand on his food tray while eating and flip it over when done.

Truman enjoys various vegetables, including leafy greens, yellow squash, zucchini, bell peppers, tomato treats, and Mazuri tortoise chow.

Over the past few weeks, we had some unseasonal cold, wet weather, including a bit of snow. Truman stayed warm and dry in his heated house.

All the tortoise houses have a floor heater and an overhead ceramic bulb heater. Each heating source operates independently and is connected to a thermostat. If one of the heat sources should fail, the other kicks in.

We also took precautions against the rain and unexpected snow by covering the tortoise homes’ roofs with blankets and plastic tarps. We had a couple of days of heavy rain, but everyone pulled through just fine. Now Truman and the other tortoises are out enjoying the warm sunshine. Thank you for reading and have a happy animal-filled day.
